What gets you in early to the office in the morning?
I love the challenge of solving difficult problems. Almost every day, I encounter obstacles, questions, and confusing issues presented to me by colleagues and clients in connection with the financial engagements and tax returns for which I’m responsible. Coming up with effective solutions is both exciting and motivating for me.
Can you give a business story that typifies your passion for your work?
I was working with a controller who was understaffed and overwhelmed, and consequently, struggling to get us tax information in a timely fashion. I offered to send a staff person to his office to help him pull the data needed. The controller was extremely grateful for our willingness to assist him, and as a result, we were able to complete the client’s tax returns in a timely fashion.
This gesture enabled me to gain his trust and build a personal relationship with him, which has deepened in subsequent years. This experience cemented my perspective on my job as collaborating with clients to help them succeed, rather than merely cranking out a financial product.
What brings you the most satisfaction at the end of the day?
For me, public accounting is about helping to relieve our clients’ anxieties relating to their own finances and the finances of their businesses. My greatest satisfaction comes from finding ways to meet my clients’ needs and improve their financial situation, whether it’s by reducing their tax liability, providing advice to improve the function of their business, or simply going above and beyond to satisfy them with personalized and timely service.
In short, my greatest satisfaction is having satisfied clients.
Does your work benefit your home life in any way?
I am grateful for the opportunities my career has provided me to serve those around me. I’ve provided informal tax advice to non-profit organizations, served as a trustee for the trust of a family friend, helped family and friends with their tax returns and other financial questions, and volunteered to promote financial literacy in the school system. All these actions bring me closer to my community.
